Geochemistry Scientific Group

Performs environmental geochemical assessment of mining regions, develops exploration methods, and monitors seismic zones.

Geochemistry Scientific Group

Overview

The Geochemistry Group mainly works in the following directions.

1. Environmental geochemical and ecological assessment of mining regions and territories adjacent to mines in Armenia; development of methods for detecting and evaluating secondary geochemical halos of heavy, metallic, radioactive, and rare elements; and compilation of geochemical maps of large anomalous fields. The work is carried out mainly in the area of the Pkhrut uranium deposit near the Kajaran copper-molybdenum deposit in Syunik Province and in the Tegh Mountain areas of Kotayk Province. In recent years, the main work has focused on exploration for deposits containing rare and radioactive elements in Armenia, and a unique exploratory geochemical methodology has been developed for such deposits.

2. In cooperation with staff of the Institute of Geophysics and Engineering Seismology, geochemical monitoring is carried out in seismically active zones of Armenia.

3. In 2024-2025, with support from the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia and the Science Committee, new equipment was acquired and a laboratory for processing mineral samples and chemical analysis was established, equipped with grinding devices of different sizes and a chemical analyzer.
